Adaptation of Wall House 2 by John Hejduk

The collective design studio focuses on the notion of “The Double” - taken from Dostoyevsky’s novel - as tool to aid in the design process. The studio focused on the symbiotic relationship between two entities and challenged students to explore architecture as an artifact formed by embodied frictions and entangled relationships.
The first project focuses on the analysis of Wall House 2 by John Hejduk. The house itself, looks at organic forms and the division of spaces into private, public and semi-public spheres. The insertion honors these features, and introduces an additional living quarters equipped with its one vertical circulation. However it is not freestanding and requires the original house for structural support. Thus the relationship between the 2 structures is one of commensalism.

Adaptation of Wall House 2 by John Hejduk and Maison Bordeaux by OMA

The second project focuses on the analysis of Wall House 2 by John Hejduk and The Bordeaux House by OMA. The project emphasized the attention to circulation, and separation of public and private spaces as seen in the Wall House 2, as well as the unique circulation nature seen in the Bordeaux House. The result of this is a dual home that orbits around the concepts of transparency and movement. The curtain is a major motif of the home (taken directly from the OMA house), but between structures it translates from being a purely privacy-tool into a vital structural component.
